Digital Empowerment of Primary Care

The healthcare system faces significant challenges due to an aging population and a rising prevalence of chronic diseases.

As a result, the demand for primary care providers (PCPs) is growing.

However, limited access to specialists and an overwhelming administrative workload have contributed to burnout and dissatisfaction among PCPs.
Our vision is to create a digital PCP companion that provides direct access to specialist advice and enhanced administrative support.
This tool will improve the effectiveness and satisfaction of professionals working in primary care medicine.
Team
Our dedicated team brings together expertise from medical education, software development, engineering, business development, law and design. We collaborate closely with leading clinicians, hospitals, researchers from Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) and the Niels Bohr Institute as well as the Danish Regions.
Research involvement
Melatech is partner of multiple research projects aimed at advancing healthcare technology. As a partner in the Artificial Intelligence in Smart Clinical research consortium (AISC), we focus on integrating AI-driven solutions to enhance clinical decision-making.

Through the Dermoscopic Augmented Histology Trial (DAHT), we investigate whether providing pathologists with pre-removal images of lesions improves the accuracy and efficiency of histopathological evaluations.

Our involvement in SynTIA contributes to developing an AI system to assist dermatologists in diagnosing skin cancer more quickly and accurately.

Additionally, our collaboration on PRSONAL is dedicated to personalizing healthcare delivery through AI-driven insights, optimizing patient care and resource allocation.

Technological innovations have been fundamental in evolving medicine in the past century. Unfortunately, medical education is lacking behind even though technologies like app based feedback, gamification, and artificial intelligence might help us become better doctors. The way we treat our patients AND the way we train our doctors must be based on evidence – that is why I am very happy that Melatech in this project is working with clinical experts and medical education researchers to scientifically explore the optimal use of their products.

Diagnosing malignant from benign skin lesions can be very challenging, especially regarding pigmented skin lesions. These lesions are readily accessible to photography and it is reasonable to use artificial intelligence algorithms to categorize them. I am excited to be a part of the scientific team testing Melatech's products and I hope the personalized feedback of Dermloop and the diagnostic aid offered by artificial intelligence can enhance the diagnostic accuracy of doctors working with skin cancer. This would ultimately lead to better outcomes for our patients.

Bringing together large-scale image data with the science of learning is a crucial next step for medical education in the next decades to come. The way we have trained and taught students and health care professional until now has been based on a 'one size fits all' approach, and not based on the learning needs of individuals. This is where the use of AI and the work Melatech is doing may help broaden our understanding of how to provide high-value low-cost education for the generation to come.

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing dramatically worldwide, exerting a massive workload on the healthcare systems. Diagnosing skin cancer and especially melanoma can be very challenging, and the learning curve to expert level with the current learning concepts is long and inefficient. Working with an excellent multidisciplinary international team in developing and testing Melatech´s dynamic AI-based digital educational platform (Dermloop) is a crucial step towards solving the daily clinical challenges related to melanoma diagnostics and improving patient outcomes.

AI based systems have claimed superhuman performance on several subfields – including dermoscopy - but the clinical applications have so far been limited. Instead of trying to replace the doctors, we aim at making them even better in this collaborative project together with Melatech. An AI based learning system has the promise of your own personal mentor that is always available. Exploring the link between AI and education with the doctors in the loop, will increase our understanding of both sides of the equation.

Dermloop has the potential of revolutionizing skin cancer management. The AI augmented individual learning will bypass the ordinary training in diagnosing skin cancer and especially melanocytic lesions, which notoriously is very demanding. The prospect of getting rapid feedback on all photographed lesions in the clinic, either handled in own practice or referred, will ensure rapid learning, pattern recognition, and secure much better patient treatment. With the huge increase in skin cancer, both melanoma and non-melanoma, in Denmark as well as in the entire western world, we need all the help we can get to manage this “tsunami” of patient referrals.
